A Vacation Experience You Will Long Remember !
Visit the Legendary "Friendly Whales" of Laguna San Ignacio!
Blue Waters Kayaking has been operating whale watching camps in
Baja, Mexico for over 15 years, predominantly in Magdalena Bay. In
February 2009, mid-season, we moved our entire camp 200 miles north
to the whale calving lagoon at Laguna San Ignacio. Why make such a
radical move in the middle of the season? For the best of reasons:
the quality of whale watching and the frequency of whale-human
interactions is much better at Laguna San Ignacio.
Laguna San Ignacio is the smallest of the three major whale calving
lagoons in Baja. Still, it hosts a significant percentage of the
Gray Whale calving population (last year at the peak there were over
300 whales in the lagoon). It is also the most remote: 30 miles off
the highway, tucked away in the heart of the Vizcaino Biosphere
Reserve in central Baja, one of the most rugged, driest, and least
(human) populated areas in the entire peninsula. The Vizcaino is
also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a federally protected
sanctuary for birds and sea mammals.
We at Blue Waters feel extremely fortunate to have found a "home" at
Laguna San Ignacio.
Join Chris Starbird and Joe Medeiros for a special trip to see the Gray
Whales in their birthing and calving lagoon Laguna San Ignacio.
Your Lead Guide Chris Starbird holds a Masters of Science in Marin Biology and is
an Expert Naturalist, Kayaker, and Oyster Farmer.
Joining Chris is Joe Medeiros, Professor Emeritus at Sierra College.
Joe is a Naturalist, a Botanist, and Director of the Sierra College Natural
History Museum.
Our Laguna San Ignacio Camp - Now Featuring YURT Accommodations and
Birding by Kayak.
On our Whale Camp tours, you will have the opportunity to visit the
whales every day. And there are plenty of other nature experiences
in store as well. Our Laguna San Ignacio camp is at an ideal
location, adjacent to a pristine and extensive mangrove estuary.
This presents unique opportunities for birding and kayaking. Our
guides are all skilled naturalists and will share their knowledge of
the area's natural history, marine biology, birds and local flora.
Through their humor and skill, they will give you a rich, deep, and
intimate experience of this place. Our Mexican chef, Lala, will
prepare delicious and authentic home-cooked meals for you each day.
Our camp now features YURT accommodations. Yurts are a round
Mongolian style wall tent that holds up extremely well in the wind.
Our 12' diameter YURTS provide ample room for double occupancy
sleeping on comfortable cots and all your gear. If you have never
slept in a YURT before, you are in for a treat!

“When I went to Laguna San Ignacio in February 2009, there were
whales spouting, spy-hopping, and cavorting everywhere. And
they were not at all shy about approaching the boats. It was truly
amazing how they swam up to the boats and presented themselves
to us. Seeing them ‘eye to eye’, and reaching out and touching
them,was an awe inspiring experience.”
