HIGHLIGHTS
Ready to jump-start your kayaking skills with a weeklong skills training in beautiful Baja? The first three days of this trip we will receive skills training from Five-Star BCU coach Ginni Callahan, one of Baja's preeminent guides and instructors.

Here is what Ginni says about the BCU trainings: "2-Star skills are about figuring out why the boat does what it does and how to be the most efficient - - using edges for turning, using blade angles and momentum, engaging the body for power and stamina. By the time one passes 3-Star, all of that is instinctive. Forward, backward, bracing, rolling, towing, rescues. 3-Star gets a paddler ready to go challenge rough water with style and efficiency." This phase of the trip will be based from our Eco-Retreat on the Sea of Cortez.

Following the successful completion of Phase 1, we will move over to the Pacific side of the peninsula to put our new skills into action. We will practice surf-zone and open water paddling skills during three days of instruction with experienced NOLS Leader and instructor Pancho Mayoral. Pancho is an expert paddler and Baja native who has been navigating these waters all his life. He has intimate local knowledge of both land and sea. This trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn and prctice kayaking skills with two of Baja's BEST instructors, and among the best on the West
Coast. Not for the faint of heart, but, if you are game, not to be missed!

ITINERARY
Day One
Our friendly local transportation service will greet you at the airport and escort you to our affiliated eco-resort on the shores of the Sea of Cortez. At the resort, our guides will meet with your group for orientation and to answer any questions you may have. You'll then settle into your cozy beachside or ocean-view "casita" (thatched cottage) and into the serenity and peacefulness of this beautiful place.

Days Two - Three
Days at the resort are filled with kayaking, hiking, snorkeling and just plain relaxing. One afternoon may be spent taking an optional excursion to a natural seaside hot spring by panga. Delicious meals are prepared and served in the communal open-air dining room by local Mexican "home-style" cooks. The menus may include dairy, eggs, mainly organic produce, and sometimes a fresh "catch-of-the-day" brought to us by local fishermen. At each meal there will be a vegetarian option. Evenings are spent around the fire circle, sharing stories and music, recounting events of the day, and preparing for the following day's activities.

Days Four - Six
On day four, in the spirit of adventure, we will load up the kayaks and begin our expedition with a 3-mile crossing to Danzante Island. We'll spend three days paddling the pristine waters of the famed Loreto Islands Marine Park. We'll camp on secluded white sand beaches, paddle over azure seas under brilliant blue skies, and view frigate birds, osprey, pelicans, blue-footed boobies, rays, dolphins, and sea lions. We may even catch an occasional glimpse of a spouting whale or surfacing sea turtle on this remarkable aquatic adventure.

On the mornings of travel days, we paddle to our next island beach campsite. These incredible desert islands offer exceptional mountain and sea vistas, making them the perfect place to experience the area's abundant marine life. During our afternoons and layover days, we spend our time birding, fishing, beachcombing, skills training, or simply relaxing.

Day Seven
On the final day of our expedition, we break camp and paddle back to the resort, where a van awaits to transport us to our Loreto hotel in time for a hot shower and an evening on the town. On our final night, we'll enjoy exploring Loreto's quaint streets and local culture, filled with shops, restaurants, cafés, and friendly local people.

Day Eight
Depending on your departure plans, you may find time to enjoy a leisurely breakfast, visit the mission, or explore the myriad shops of Loreto. Our van transports you from the hotel to the airport in plenty of time for your flight. Return home refreshed and renewed, with many fond memories of new friends and relaxing, adventure-filled days on Baja's Sea of Cortez.
